Teaching BDSM 101

BDSM 101 at San Francisco State is made possible by the Experimental College Program. EXCO is the only reason I was able to get this platform and begin growing it. EXCO allows Undergrad SFSU students to teach a 1 unit course on anything their heart desires. I was introduced to the program after taking "Grownup 101" and "The Nonfiction History of Superheroes" where I learned how to file taxes and get my rent deposit back as well as why Superman was invented as a comic character. These courses come with a light load (remember: 1 unit) and helped ease the stress of upper division courses.

I saw how much fun these courses were and wanted to teach my very own. After a lot of deliberation, I decided I had nothing worthwhile to teach about and didn't apply. Then, on one of the last days the Fall 2021 application was open: I got stoned. I had an epiphany about being able to teach BDSM 101 and allow my BDSM newsletter to live on in a more mature form. I applied and knew I would regret it the next day.

Except the regret never came, an acceptance letter did. With that, my life changed. I began planning my lessons, forcing my partner to sit through hours of simulated lectures until they were just right, and reaching out to potential sponsors of the course. I managed to gather about 5 donations from large companies for that first semester and was able to give my students free sex toys and lube. The next semester I had a wider variety. Then I had guest speakers and guest instructors and random people sitting in on my class because they wanted the information but couldn't enroll. Everything snowballed in the best of ways, all the way to now. I am being requested as a guest speaker and am writing out workshops to offer. This is all so unexpected but so welcomed. I am incredibly pleased to be here all because of the Experimental College Program at San Francisco State.

About the Teacher

BDSM has not always had the best of connotations for me. I was groomed into the lifestyle by someone nearly 10 years older than me. As a tween, I didn't fully grasp the weight of the information that had been bestowed upon me under the guise of "you're so mature for 12!" I engaged in really risky activities for the next 4 years (it is a miracle I didn't fall pregnant or get taken advantage of again) until I realized just how dangerous my lifestyle was.

I opted to abstain from BDSM until I was of legal age, at which point I would begin an "Unlearning Journey". I spent a year learning things the right way and found that blogging about it helped solidify the new information. Eventually I was the owner of a popular newsletter and I was hiring writers to keep up with content demands. We had a great community built and even sold merchandise related to BDSM, but when I got to college I realized it was not feasible to run a huge newsletter business AND pass all my classes.

After two years of schooling (and a global pandemic) I had found my groove enough to start adventuring out into the kink-space again. That's when I discovered the Experimental College Program and, well, the rest is history.

I have big dreams that go in all sorts of directions, but I hope to either go into a completely different job path (non-sex) or continue my journey down this path. Porn is definitely on the table as I find it a fun experience and believe it helps round out my views and ability to educate more in the future. I may also check out getting teaching credentials to work at universities full time and teach my course. For now, though, I will continue educating through social media where I can and visiting colleges to do workshops and crash courses on sex and BDSM.

Students deserve better, and while I am not perfect I sure am better than the junk that is being taught in some states. I want to fix that eventually, but we will start with baby steps.

I look forward to meeting all sorts of cool people on this journey, and hope you will support better sex education for our up and coming generations with me.

Love, Phoenixxx
